Custom sorting

Updated Oct 27, 2026

A custom sort type saves a product ordering rule that you can reuse across collections. Use one when a standard sort order does not express how you want products arranged. Open Merchandising → Sort types to see your saved types or create one.

Choose a type

  • Single criterion orders products by one metric, such as product type or a selected product metafield.
  • Priority applies several criteria in sequence: the first decides the order, and later criteria break ties.
  • Weighted score combines several criteria using the weights you set.

The sort type list shows each type's status, criteria, where it is used and when it was updated. You can search the list, edit a type, or switch it active or inactive. Available types and metrics depend on your store's data and plan.

Use a saved type

Create a sort type, then open a collection from Merchandising → View collections. Choose it under Sort order from Saved sort types, preview the product order, and save or select Sort now to apply it. An inactive type cannot be selected for a new collection, though an existing collection can still show it.

See Create a sort type for Single criterion settings and Combine sort criteria for Priority and Weighted score. Product groups and segments can also affect the final order of products in a collection.
