Choose a stock alert action mode

Updated Oct 26, 2026

The Action mode decides which stock condition an alert checks. Choose it when you create or edit an alert under Stock operations → Alerts. Each mode has its own settings; targeting, recipients and schedule are set elsewhere in the same form.

Low stock

Enter the stock level at which you want to be alerted. Scope can measure total inventory, any variant, all variants, stock ratio or the number of available variants. For example, a threshold of 5 with Total inventory matches a product whose variants hold 5 units or fewer in total. You can exclude products that continue selling when out of stock or do not track inventory, and limit the alert to selected sales channels. See Create a low-stock alert for the full setup.

Out of stock

Find products whose total inventory is 0 or less. You can exclude products that continue selling when out of stock or do not track inventory, and limit results to selected sales channels. This mode has no threshold to set.

Published but out of stock

Find Active products with total inventory of 0 or less that are still published on at least one selected sales channel. Select the sales channels you want to check.

Hidden but back in stock

Set a Min inventory level. Then choose how to recognise a hidden product: by its Draft, Archived or Unlisted status, or because an Active product is missing from a selected sales channel. The alert matches when total inventory reaches the minimum.

Continue selling when out of stock

Find variants whose inventory is 0 or less while Shopify allows them to continue selling. This mode has no additional stock setting.

Restocked

Set Restocked within to the number of recent days to check. You can watch all products, limit results to products hidden by status, or find Active products missing from selected sales channels.

Location risk

Select stock locations, choose Available or On hand inventory, and enter an At or below threshold. Any location matches when a variant is low at one selected location. Combined first adds its stock across the selected locations, then compares the total with the threshold.
